CHAPTER 16

“Stay, Bella,” I said and dropped her leash, walking six feet away from her and turning around. I waited fifteen seconds and yelled, “Come!” She slowly stood and lumbered over to me as Jared started laughing.

“What are you laughing at?” I asked crossly.

I arrived home from work not too long ago and had taken Bella and Topknot into the backyard to practice for the dog show on Friday. I had Googled things dogs did at dog shows and was overwhelmed by the variety of different types of dog shows there were. Some were just based on looks, some on obedience, and some agility, like I had seen the other day at the Hope Springs Kennel Club. I had to go back and look at what exactly I had signed up for, and when I did, I saw it was basic obedience. I breathed a sigh of relief once I read that.

Bella was well trained. I had been to three eight-week dog-training courses with her of increased difficulty. I knew when I found her as a puppy and realized how big she would get that I couldn’t have a 200-pound dog untrained. That was a recipe for disaster. Personally, I was a big believer that all dogs should have basic obedience skills, regardless of breed or size.

“I can’t believe you actually entered Bella into a dog show.”

“You’re not being very supportive. You’re going to hurt her feelings. It’s basic obedience, and Bella has that down. Well, almost,” I said as she got tired of standing and lay down by my side, which she wasn’t supposed to do without a command.

“What exactly are you two supposed to do?”

“She has to heel as we walk around the ring, do the sit, stay, come, like we just did. She is supposed to sit by my side for sixty seconds, which we just failed. Nothing hard.”

“That’s all there is? Huh, I guess I thought it would be more complex.”

“The regular shows are. There are a lot more commands they need to know, and the sit-stay has to be held for much longer, but this is strictly an amateur show. They don’t even separate the dogs by breed. They just have a small, medium, and large division.”

“Isn’t Bella more of an extra-large breed?”

“Hey, there are only three divisions, so I picked the one that she most closely fit into. Now can you occupy Topknot while I work with Bella some more? He keeps getting in the way.”

“Sure, if you think you can get her up.” He smirked.

I gave Jared a dirty look as he distracted Topknot, and I could hear him laughing at me as it took three attempts to get Bella to get back into a sit. Though, to be fair, it wasn’t a big deal if when Bella and I were out, she lay down when I told her to sit. Usually, if we were out for a walk and I told her to sit, it was because we stopped to talk to someone.
